Leadership development for engineering, manufacturing and technology businesses across Northumberland, delivered in partnership with Connect Northumberland and the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Northumberland’s engineering, manufacturing and technology sector runs on technically brilliant people. But being brilliant at the job and being brilliant at leading people? Those are two completely different skill sets. And most organisations promote one without ever developing the other.
Connect Northumberland saw this pattern playing out across the region. They knew the sector needed something practical, credible, and built specifically for the people doing the work not a generic leadership course that ticks a box.
So they brought Opportunity Global in to build it.
Together with the Royal Academy of Engineering, we designed a programme that carries real accreditation weight in engineering and manufacturing and actually works for the people going through it.

One consistent result:
Research consistently shows that 95% of project problems are communication problems. Not technical failures or process breakdowns. People stuff.
The businesses coming into this programme were switched-on organisations who could see the gap between how their managers were performing technically and how they were leading their teams, and they wanted to close it.
They each had teams made up of technically skilled people in management roles who’d never been given the tools to do the people stuff well.
This meant they had no shared language around feedback, no framework for difficult conversations, and no real roadmap for building a team that actually trusts you.
People who were never given the skills to lead in the first place.
With our help, we set about changing that and creating the Management Essentials Programme.
Opportunity Global, in partnership with Connect Northumberland and accredited by the Royal Academy of Engineering, designed and delivered the Management Essentials Programme, a 9-month, 9-module leadership development programme built specifically for managers in technical industries.
Focusing on practical, immediately applicable human skills delivered through workshops, 1:1 coaching, peer learning, and cross-company collaboration.
Each cohort brings together 20–22 managers from different organisations across Northumberland, Tharsus, Osbit, Catapult, Northumberland Council, NHS, Northumberland Estates, British Engines and many more, creating a cross-industry learning community that outlasts the programme itself.
The feedback from past participants is clear:
I’m now a completely different team leader than I was at the start.
There’s a million and one things I’ve taken away from this course that I use every day.
I know now I can handle different situations without panicking.
Be open minded, this programme will change your life.

One participant used to go “balling” into conversations, and not always listening. Now he takes a breath, pauses, and leads calmly. His team noticed the difference.
Another participant avoided difficult conversations until burnout forced his hand. Using the FBI feedback model from the programme, he addressed an issue, performance managed them, and the team got stronger.
Another participant was promoted, then faced a team member who made her feel “out of her depth.” Using the Kilmann conflict tool and her new coaching skills, she regained her confidence and redesigned her team’s entire appraisal process. Her words: “It’s liberating, I now have a formula to work with.”
One of the biggest challenges we see across Northumberland is people being promoted into management roles without the skills or support to succeed. The Management Essentials programme has transformed this for our local business community.
We’ve watched participants grow in confidence from day one to graduation, becoming more self-aware, more decisive, and better able to get the best out of their teams. The real-world application is the biggest shift: participants implementing cost-saving improvements, having strategic conversations with senior leadership, restructuring how they delegate, and even connecting with each other to pitch for work together.

Is your organisation going through growth, change or cultural shift?
If the people stuff feels like the hardest part — the conversations that aren’t happening, the gaps in confidence, the culture that hasn’t quite landed yet — that’s exactly where we work.
