22 January 2019

Yesterday marked Blue Monday – a relatable day in the calendar since 2005. The term was coined to mark that day in January where everybody is feeling down. There is a lack of scientific evidence to support the Blue Monday phenomenon but, there is a lot of theory and anecdotal evidence to support this argument. Looking after your mental wellbeing is important because it affects your output: in both work and in your personal and social life too. At the end of the day, your output will affect your happiness so here are some tips for having a positive and realistic output at work.
See our infographic below which highlights some stress at work statistics from Health and Safety Exchange (HSE).

1. Be organised to help you feel and be more productive

To do lists are a simple, yet effective way of organising your time both in and out of work. They are also an effective way of documenting how much you have achieved; forming a visual representation of what you are capable of.

2. Prioritise your priorities

It is not productive to take on an unrealistic workload because you will start to feel out of your depth. Instead, look at the time and resources available to you and make three clear priorities. This way, you will move forward creating landmarks of success in your work. Understand what you want to achieve and stay focused so that you don’t take on an unrealistic amount.

3. Keep up to date

Keep things fresh at work by rewarding yourself with the time to invest in research and keeping informed with changes in your industry. The world is rapidly changing on a global level through mass data and technological implications. Being inspired is important to have a creative and fresh input by researching new themes. Adding to your creative bank will increase your output and help you move forward in your career.

4. Create an output of kindness

“Doing good, does you good”. Altruism is the act of performing acts of kindness that puts others before yourself. In doing so, it boosts your self esteem and allows for a positive mindset at work. Random acts of kindness are a great way to increase positive morale with your co-workers. Offer to help somebody else with their priorities if you have capacity.

5. Practice Gratitude

Appreciation is key to being content and being content is a vehicle for happiness. Learn to have gratitude for the small things in life and find a way of tracking this. Keeping a gratitude journal is an effective way of capturing your positivity.
